Tikanga is about purpose, practices, and protocols, and you’ll find it in every aspect of te ao Māori (the Māori world view).

Your local class will have a specialised delivery strand that brings foundational tikanga learning to life.

When you pass this programme you will get this qualification:

New Zealand Certificate in Tikanga (Mātauranga Māori) (Level) 3

You will learn about:

  • The traditional thinking behind tikanga and how it is applied in te ao Māori and the modern world
  • How to manage and apply the tikanga in a range of different contexts including leadership, problem solving and research.
  • Protocols and cultural practices that provide solutions to modern day problems.

Applicants should demostrate a keen interest in Tikanga Māori.

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed an SIT programme, and be eligible for award of a qualification, they must have:

  • attended for not less than 80% of the timetabled class hours and other scheduled learning activities relating to the programme
  • completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments
  • successfully completed assessment requirements for all modulesand achieved a total of 60 credits.

In order to be awarded the Certificate in Tikanga Māori, students must attain the minimum number of prescribed credits as specified in the programme schedule.
